Sketchpad Confession #1

Sketchy

First confession: How I ended up in Japan. For the record, I haven't been here ten years straight; it's just been ten years since my first stay. Also, I have found a purpose for being here, but that's a topic for another confession.

Can't believe it's been almost ten years...

So there you have it; the first in a newly re-booted Sketchpad Confessional, an experiment in journal-style sketchbook comics. Things I'm learning so far: (1) I need to use thicker paper. (2) I think this simple, sketchy style works for me, in that it allows me to quickly do a comic over coffee and toast on my day off. (3) I'm making no promises about how often I'll post these things, but given the quick style and that it's just simple life observations, I shouldn't run out of ideas any time soon.

Sketchpad Confessional : Coffee-loving Chibi Me

P342

I did an about-two-page sketch comic sitting at a coffee shop this morning. I think I'll post it later today, but in the meantime here's a quickly doodled self-portrait.

Sketchpad Confessional : Chibi Me?

P301

I'm toying with the idea of re-booting Sketchpad Confessional as an audio-biographical sketch comic (emphasizing the "confessional" part of the name more than before). If I did, I'd want to keep it on a super simple style. Hence these character study of myself, Chibi-style.

2 Faces (Sketchpad Confessional)

I've been wanting to simplify my "superhero/real people" art style for a while now. I'm really into the idea of being economic with my line use, especially with finished, inked illustrations.

Looking through some old sketches I've landed on some keys. These two faces show a couple if things I can implement: The first one (the elf chick) has simplified hair; basically it's one shape rather than a bunch if lines. The second face has simplified eyes, with the bottom lid non-existent, making for fewer lines still.

Branch-Face

P538

A space-fairing botanist whose ship was caught in a radiation storm just as he performing an experiment with bonsai in his lab. The resulting power surge caused the branch he was trimming to take root in his forehead, forever changing him into the hero known as Branch-Face. Friend of Spaceboy Ed.

Spaceboy Ed 2

P528

This is just a doodle but I'm pretty sure I like this version better. And I actually had an idea the other day for how to use this character.

What's she thinking? (random sketch)

P503

This sketch isn't based on anyone in particular; just a random sketch of a girl. But it dies pose a question I'm sure every guy has asked about some girl at some point.

This one's been kicking around for a while now. Drew it several months ago, even shot it with my iPhone for quick and easy posting, but never got around to it till now.

#30characters - Day 29 - Tiny Monster

P493

Slight cheat, as this is an idea I've had for a while. I don't have a name for these critters yet, but they're another kind of monster for my webcomic, Doodze. I'd tell you more, but it would contain spoilers; can't explain what these are without giving too much away.

28 - Mr. Muko

P486

Another fancy-suit-wearing alien mobster, this time of the big and hairy variety. I like this one better than Zarnix, I think. There aren't enough harry, fat aliens, if you ask me. Maybe this guy will be Zarnox's boss... Or rival... Or both?
